The Importance of Music in the Movies
Music is a very important factor to include when making a movie. If you take music away from movies, even in award-winning ones, you will end up with a dull movie that lacks something. This is why having the right music for different parts of a movie are essential. So, what makes music so important to be incorporated in movies, here are the reasons why.
It aids in expressing certain emotions or atmosphere within the movie.
Motion films started without the sound of voice. Actors would convey their emotions through their faces and action, though there were dialogue cards present. During this time, having a music score incorporated in the movie was very important as it also helps portray the emotion of the scene. If the character needs to portray a sad feeling, accompanying the scene with a sad music can make the audience feel the emotion being portrayed, even without words.
In modern-day film making, the same thing is also true. Music can help amplify the emotion that is being set by the character. There are different types of music that can be placed within a movie scene, depending on the genre. If the movie is a comedy, then a light or silly tune can help lighten up the mood of the audience. For action movies, the music being set for the scenes can increase its intensity in terms of power and excitement. Whatever the genre, the right music score can amplify the drama within the movie.
Creating the mood and establishing the setting
In the beginning of a movie, music can create the mood before the movie can even begin. If you’re watching a horror film, you may have noticed the eerie music being played at the start of the movie. The music tells you that the movie your about to see is a scary one. This can set the mood, making the movie more thrilling. Even in movies with other genre, the music at the beginning of the movie is important in setting up the mood be it action, drama or comedy.
Aside from the mood, the music score in a movie can also give the audience a feel of the setting. If the movie has a western setting, a western music can help make the audience feel the western atmosphere.
Increases the thrill and mislead the viewers
If you have watched “Jaws” or other shark-related movies, you may have noticed the tune being played before the shark attacks or as the shark is approaching. This kind of music can increase the thrill, especially in horror movies and suspense, though the same goes for other movie genres.
Aside from the thrill, there are times that movies can also mislead the viewer and add to the enjoyment of the film. An example would be when an eerie music is being played while there’s a view of the main character being stalked, only to find out that it was just his friend giving him a surprise. Another situation is when a calm music is being played and is then abruptly change to a scary or violent tone as the monster suddenly appears out of nowhere.
Finding New Music
Back in the day, one had to go out and physically search for new music, either at the store or at a live show. That method is obsolete. Today, you can find all kinds of new and unheard of music at the click of a mouse. The music store is out and online shopping is in. There are many websites like Bandcamp and Beatport that offer downloadable content at the same price as an audio CD. The advantage here is that you don’t have to waste valuable time and money getting to the store and you don’t have to worry about your purchase getting damaged in any way. Each site has its own search engine if you are looking for something in particular, and you can browse through a number of categories such as release date, genre, etc.
Another advantage of downloading music from the internet is that these websites will show you albums that are related to your search in some way or other. It could be by the same artist, or it could be the same genre, or it could even be a completely different artist and genre that happens to have the same name (This has happened to me by the way). In this spirit, you can sit at your computer the entire day, just exploring all the related albums the website throws at you. Most times, you may not find anything that will interest you, but when you do, you will feel that all the wasted hours were worth it.
Popular social networking sites are also good sources of new underground music. Every major artist, and therefore every small-time artist, has a Facebook page, a SoundCloud page, a YouTube page, a MySpace page, a ReverbNation page and possibly more pages than I care to know about, though Facebook and MySpace should not be taken too seriously; Facebook, because everyone is so lost in their own pseudo personal virtual lives that any music on the site usually falls on deaf ears, and; MySpace, because of the file size and format restrictions – No one wants to hear low quality MP3′s when you get loss-less audio on SoundCloud.
YouTube and SoundCloud are, in my humble opinion, the most reliable sources for good, unique music simply because that’s what they were designed for – media sharing. When someone logs in to one of these sites, you can be sure that their only aim is to look for music.
SoundCloud even gives you the option of downloading directly from the website. If the uploader has enabled downloads for his upload, that is. Many DJ’s are using this to their advantage by uploading their live sets for promotional purposes. Independent producers, as well, are uploading their original music and enabling downloads, as a kind of gift to their listeners on SoundCloud for supporting them and spreading their music. You can also find ‘buy’ links to some tracks depending on whether the uploader has inserted one or not. This will probably lead you back to the popular pay sites like Beatport or iTunes.
Music for Weddings: Outdoors
Having an outdoor wedding can be extraordinarily beautiful. When planning an outdoor wedding, make sure that the music is just as beautiful. There are many factors that can make wedding music the perfect accompaniment for a ceremony or make it a near miss.
Size of the Wedding: The number of guests one has effects the volume needed for the music. The larger and more spread out the wedding guests are the more volume will be needed so that all the guests will be able to hear clearly. These varied volume requirements can be accomplished by adjusting the number of instruments, the choice of instruments and sound reinforcement.
Number of Instruments: Some use this rule as a standard for determining how many instruments to use: use one more musician for each 50 guests over 150. I believe this can help as a guide or starting point but the type of instruments and sound reinforcement are more important determining factors to obtain a sound that all the guests can hear.
Instrument Type – Unamplified instruments: Other than percussion instruments, the brass instruments and ensembles naturally give the most volume. Some examples would be the trumpet and brass quintet. Woodwinds, especially the flute, would be the set of instruments with the next loudest volume. There is a large difference in volume between the brass and woodwind instruments. The softest of the instrument families is the stringed instruments. Stringed instruments include the violin, viola, cello and harp. When choosing instruments within these instrument families, the higher pitched (the higher the notes the instrument plays) the instrument is the louder the instrument is. For example, in the brass family the trumpet is higher pitched than the tuba and it’s sound is louder and carries farther.
Amplified Instruments: Amplified instruments are instruments that have built-in pickups so that the instruments can be amplified through an amplifier. These are instruments such as electric guitar, electric acoustic guitar, some harps, midi harps, bass, and electric violin. When hiring musicians it important to ask if amplified instruments have built-in pickups. If not, there are potential problems that can occur. (See sound reinforcement.)
Sound Reinforcement: Any instrument, or any combination of instruments, can be used if you have proper sound reinforcement. Some wedding couples use their own sound equipment. This is almost never a good idea. If problems arise, as they often do, one needs to have back up chords and equipment and the time and knowledge to trouble shoot 15 minutes before the ceremony. Professional musicians using their own equipment will be prepared for all circumstances. It is important to realize that for some ensembles and instruments there will be an extra cost for sound reinforcement. Using the correct instrument type and number of instruments can eliminate the need for sound reinforcement to avoid problems and cost. If using amplification, using amplified instruments with pickups built-in will eliminate feed back potential. Using microphones on or next to instruments can be done outdoors but the potential problems are feedback and wind and background noise being picked up in microphones.
Electricity for Instruments: When using any amplified instruments or instruments amplified through microphones, one will need to find out if there is electricity at the location or if it can be set up.

On the other hand, a non-exclusive beat is something that comes with many attachments and may be subject to royalties. However, they are cheaper and therefore a favorite of most artists. Established singers and rappers usually buy beats that are exclusive or make deals with the producer to make it exclusive.
Of course, having a memorable beat doesn’t mean having a good song although it is a large part of the equation. Artists would need to fit the lyrics to the tune and this can be hard to do without proper training. More often than not, individuals choose to buy beats that they like and proceed to put words into it. This way, they manage to create a seamless sounding song or rap.
Note that it is also possible to buy beats that are customized. However, this is usually more expensive and takes time to do. The Five Bad Points of Mainstream Pop Music
1. The actors in the music video
If it’s a music video like g6 then you will most likely hate the video aspect, everyone is pretty much annoying, even the people singing the song. 2. Stupid lyrics.
Most people complain about the lyrics in songs not rhyming, but in my opinion those people need to shut up. Songs don’t have to rhyme, but if you’re going to make some of the song rhyme and then give up half way through, that’s just not acceptable.
Or, the problem could just be stupid lyrics. Sometimes they can go off on to something that has nothing to do with the subject of the song, or the song can be about something entirely stupid like getting drunk constantly. (good job music industry.)
Who do you think we have to blame for teens going out and getting wasted…well apart from their parents, or the person’s personality and intelligence? Music! Music that keeps reinforcing the idea that cool people go to parties and get drunk all the time. And all American teens seem to care about is being cool, normally I wouldn’t say that we should act more like the Japanese as they’re not exactly perfect, but the Japanese encourage their kids to be nerds, and a nerd does not mean an annoying person whom constantly has a cold or only cares about their studies. You can be good at school and still be cool. If I could mention a nerd who got top billing I would say Light from Death Note, but he’s insane, he kind of went around killing people… But he got all the ladies!… and then killed them…Ya… I’ll stop talking now…
3. Guest verses.
Annoying guest verses, sometimes songs have a guest who sings a bit, and most of us think the song would be much better without them, like JYJ’s ‘Ayy Girl’ (though it was, obviously, a stupid name for a song, and the music video wasn’t very good even if the song was.)
The song was ruined by the guest verse at the beginning by Kanye West, who was (briefly) an interwebs meme. Or, sometimes guest verses can be used to point something out, for example G-Dragons heart breaker met with complaints because people were saying that he had stolen part of his song from the rapper Flo Rida. (I don’t even know if that’s how you spell the guys name, and am I supposed to capitalize it? Well it is a name so I guess I have to.) But, after the song had gotten complaints G-Dragon rewrote the song in a way, that seemed as if he was saying, ‘You’re kidding me right, look if it’s that much of a problem then I’ll just rewrite the song, geez’. Anyway, that’s something I generally don’t like, guest verses.
4. Annoying synch sounds.
This one is pretty self explanatory, sometimes if the actual music has gone overboard with the electronic beats it can feel like it’s invading your personal space, sort of, well that’s what it feels like to me. And sometimes the instrumental is way too loud and you can’t even hear the singer, but I guess sometimes that’s a good thing.
